Travel to Olhao port on Portugal's Algarve coast and you will be able to catch a ferry to Ilha de Farol which is the western end of Ilha de Calutra and has a small population which rises with summer visitors. From here you can catch a water taxi to the uninhabited Ilha Deserta. The spot is popular with kitesurfers and windsurfers of all abilities and the season is primarily from May to September although off season is possible.

Beach

Sand Gradual descent

The beach is medium sized and sandy and is in a beautiful bay on the ocean side just a couple of minutes from the quay. There is plenty of room for everyone but the summer months can see a few more visitors. You can get here by catching one of the regular water taxis from Farol.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot Regular wind

The island is a fairly windy spot and sees winds from a variety of directions which all seem to work here although the best direction is south west. The water quality is clean and you get some nice waves on the ocean side. The lagoon side has some really flat and shallow water which are ideal for beginners or those wishing to practice new stunts. The summers are pleasantly warm and you can get by with wearing just a pair of shorts. However, come the winter months and you will need a wetsuit.

Facilities

Parking

This is a pretty quiet spot with just one restaurant on it which you need to book either in advance or the minute you arrive to be sure of getting a table. Most people, however, take their own refreshments. If you want supplies and accommodation then head back to Olhao.

Safety

This is a pretty safe spot but with no real issues.
