General Information
Level:5-10 Season:April 30 — October 31 -
This can be a great spot for experienced surfers. It isn’t easy to get here, but making the effort can be worth it, especially in hurricane season.
-
Beach
-
This beach is clean, quiet and sandy with plenty of room. Unfortunately it isn’t easy to get to, but it does mean only the truly committed go out here. Once you are in Island Beach State Park, head as far as you can down Central Avenue. You’ll run out of road before the beach, so if you haven’t got a 4x4 you’ll need to park up and hitch a ride or hike for a couple of miles to the spot.
-
Wind&Waves
-
The wind here can come from a few good directions – northwest, west, southwest, southeast or east. The swell works when coming from the southeast, east, northeast. The waves start working at about 1m or so, and will hold up at 3m or more on a big day. It works at all tide levels, but you should catch it when the tide is rising for the best waves. A jetty break, both right and left, the waves are fast and powerful. On hurricane swells, it is good for some decent tubes to the right or big overhead swells. It is a quiet spot, rarely busy even on the best weekends.
-
Facilities
-
There is nothing here, it is an undeveloped state park and much better for it. If you want facilities, head back north to Seaside Park which has a fair choice of motels, restaurants and things to do.
-
Safety
-
Watch out for the current and the rocks by the jetty. Don’t get into trouble; the nearest lifeguards are miles away.
