If you’ve ever dreamed to try windsurfing, you’re going to want to come here. The geography of Kailua provides ideal conditions for windsurfing as well as kite surfing all year round. The great thing about Kailua is that it is situated in a bedroom community, and thus is shielded by the tourist throngs that can usually overcrowd many of the more popular beaches. This beach is simply amazing.
-
Beach
-
Kailua beach consists of white sand and beautiful tropical blue water. Water sports can be enjoyed here all year round.
-
Wind&Waves
-
Trade winds appear all year round and pours into the bay. The beach is shielded from heavy waves by the reefs that surround the bay a quarter of a mile out into the open water. This creates calm waters that are perfect for anyone wanting to learn either wind or kite surfing. Average winds can range from 15 to 25 mph . More experienced sailors can venture out to where the break begins in order to catch some pretty good wave action.
-
Facilities
-
Kailua is a simple twenty minute drive from Honolulu and its airport. If you’re considering staying for only a short amount of time there are numerous bed and breakfast establishments. But, if you’re considering staying longer than just a few nights, it might be best to rent out a vacation home. Kailua is home to some great wind and kite surfing schools, and has some shops that sell and rent out equipment. If you need some downtime, you can enjoy some boutique shopping, hiking, kayaking, fishing, and snorkeling.
-
Safety
-
Novices should be mindful of staying in the protected bay area. Straying too far out could mean a nasty crash on those outside reefs.
