General Information

Level:7-9 Season:May 1 — September 30

Not only is Kanaha Beach one of Maui’s most popular destinations for vacationing families, but it is also a favored location for wind and kite surfers. Even all year round, Kanaha Beach has good conditions to take advantage of.

Beach

Kanaha is a long sandy beach that is known for its easy take off shores – break water is extremely rare. During the summer season, the waves significantly die down, providing a veritable play land for water sport enthusiasts of all skill levels. Though the best season to sail is from May until September, the inside reef will remain sailable all year round.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

The propelling wind comes from the east, blowing partly on the side and on the shore, which in the summer can reach speeds of up to 18 mph . Waves subside through the major outside reef, with the lower area providing calmer and longer waves, while the upper reef gives more advanced sailors a thrill with more intense sized waves.

Facilities

Kanaha Beach is a prime family destination, equipped with such amenities like public bathrooms, showers, a roped off swimming area, as well as plenty of open fields to play in offshore. Outside the beach area are plenty of hotel accommodations and places to eat. Kanaha is also home to sail shops and its own windsurfing school.

Safety

Beginners should be warned to only sail on the lower reef, where waves are calm. The waves drastically change upon entering the upper reef; a crash on those rocks can cause serious injury or perhaps even be fatal.
