General Information
Level:3-10 Season:June 1 — September 30 -
On the northwest of Big Island, this is suitable or intermediate or better kitesurfers and windsurfers. The atmosphere is good and the locals are friendly, so check with them for advice before heading out.
-
Beach
-
The beach here is small, and is mostly sand and pebbles with a few bigger rocks. The rocks can be a hazard for kiters here, and so can the nearby trees. Temperatures on the beach don’t vary by more than a few degrees all year round, between 25- 28c, so you’ll be fine in shorts. There are never any crowds here and you should have plenty of room to get yourself sorted out and launch / land.
-
Wind&Waves
-
The wind here comes predominantly from the west, and is best during summer (June - September) when you’ll get a consistent 15-20 knots. Outside these times it’s still not bad, but tends to be more gusty. The water varies a bit, it’s never flat but can be choppy, or have waves building up from 1m to about 3m. Best time to be out is at high tide, and the water quality is clean.
-
Facilities
-
Facilities are a bit more limited than some other Hawaiian sites, but you still get plenty of room to park and public toilets. It’s an easy place to find, right at the end of Highway 19.
-
Safety
-
There are submerged rocks near the shore that you need to keep your distance from, but apart from that it’s a nice safe place to be out – you can concentrate on yourself rather than everything going on around you.
