General Information

Level:0-10 Season:January 1 — December 31

This island is found in a channel known as the Broadwater, just off one of the northern suburbs of the Gold Coast.  It is suitable for windsurfers and kitesurfers of all abilities.

Beach

The beach is sandy, and the size of it will depend on the state of the tide – the island is completely underwater at high tide, but there is plenty of room at low tide for launching and landing.  Obviously, there are no crowds at this point so as long as you can get out here you’ll only be sharing the area with a few other people, if any.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

The island is ideally positioned to catch winds from most directions, with only the westerly directions not working.  The predominant wind comes from the north, southeast, or south, and will be coming through at 10 – 20 knots.  They are thermal winds, so they tend to be better and stronger later in the day.  The water is shallow and clean, and it is always flat regardless of the direction and strength of the wind.  The only time you don’t get good conditions is during the winter.

Facilities

There is no road to this spot, so the usual way to access it is to drive into Biggera Waters and take a boat across to the island, although some experienced people will ride across from Oatland Esplanade.  The island has no structures or facilities at all.

Safety

There are quite a few boats that use the waters around the island, but as long as you keep your eyes open you’ll be ok and there are no other hazards.
