General Information

Level:0-10 Season:January 1 — December 31

Despite the name, this place was created as a reservoir to feed nearby Austin. It is a popular spot for watersports including kitesurfing and windsurfing.

Beach

The approach to the water is all grass, and there are a few areas that are empty of trees and cars where you can sort out your rigging. Most people are found here in summer, and outside this it isn’t usually crowded.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

The wind can come from most directions and it can also be gusty here, but you do have plenty of places to launch from. You’ll get thermals most of the year as well as wind, but it can be flat calm or at best inconsistent between June and August. The water is deep in the centre but shallow near to the banks, and there is a soft muddy bottom although the water is clear. Generally flat, it will produce the occasional bit of chop if the wind is blowing the right way. It is only cold in winter really, so that’s the time you’ll want to bring a wetsuit.

Facilities

Pflugerville is the nearest place, but most visitors will find themselves coming up from Austin, which is only about 20 minutes south of here. This has a wealth of choice for tourists, with plenty to keep you occupied even on the worst wind days.

Safety

Safety here is more about being aware of other lake users – it is a relatively small place and fishermen and swimmers especially should be given plenty of clearance. Stay out of the buoy area round the spillway over the dam, it’s like that for a reason. There is also a chance of hitting submerged hazards if you aren’t concentrating.
