General Information

Level:2-10 Season:January 1 — December 31

This is a good spot for experienced kiters and windsurfers all year round, but beginners will find it difficult due to the side-offshore winds. There is a cove just round the corner though that has side-onshore winds and is more suited to beginners.

Beach

The beach here is sandy in theory, muddy in practice but is only small and there isn’t much room to kit up and launch from it, although once you are out there is plenty of room to play. Surprisingly, you’ll find this spot off 3rd Avenue in San Mateo. It’s actually on the point behind the golf course, just come off 3rd Avenue at Lakeside Drive and then follow it round to the northernmost point. The shore is only a couple of minutes walk from the parking.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

A venturi wind, the main direction here is from the west but it is best from the northwest when it gives a side-offshore between 16 and 25 knots. It’s in a lagoon and the best time to come is in the afternoons and evening at high tide, and it’s good for everything – wave, freestyle, bump, jump and speed kiting. The water is often pretty murky and doesn’t look clean, but the current is only around 1 knots. It is crowded at the best of times and a summer weekend will see the beach packed.

Facilities

There are no facilities here at all, so you’ll need to head into San Mateo or Foster City if you need anything.

Safety

Beware of others on the water, it’s a busy place, and on a good weekend not everybody on the beach will be a surfer.
