General Information

Level:8-10 Season:January 1 — December 31

Langeoog translated as “Long Island” is one of Germany's East Frisian islands laying off the North West coast of Germany surrounded by the North Sea. It is a very popular tourist destination and a good place for experienced surfers. Although the winters are very cold, all year round surfing is possible if surfers are fully suited and booted.

Beach

The beach is large and sandy and very spacious apart from the summer months when it gets very crowded with holidaymakers but you can usually find space if you walk a bit further along the beach. You can get here by taking a boat from Bensersiel to Langeoog and then heading to the north of the island. No cars are allowed.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

The winds are usually frontal westerlies with depressions and are best from fall to spring. The summer winds tend to be lighter and just occasionally you may get some nice north east and east winds, although not too often. The water quality isn't great, being cloudy, but the tides offer up a lot of different conditions making for some good surfing. On a low tide you get quite a large shallow area with flat water between the beach and sandbar. As high tide is approaching there are small waves of around 1 meter high and then high tide throws out some high waves of up to 3 meters. The area works best with the westerly winds but you do have to be careful of the currents in the water.

Facilities

There is nothing much here but Langeoog town has plenty of shops, restaurants and places to stay. There is also a youth hostel a few kilometers outside of town.

Safety

No surfing is allowed south of Langeog. Also be aware of tidal currents.
