The best beach in the heart of the Santa Barbara city is Leadbetter, which is located on the edge of the strip.

Beach

This long, sandy beach is edged with grass and is a popular destination for residents and college students alike. Here, surfers, windsurfers, kite surfers and especially catamaran sailors take advantage of the low waves and warm waters to spend some time away their busy lives. Best seasons are the fall and winter (September to February).

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

Beginner surfers treasure this place as it only gets waves that are no higher than 5 to 6 ft and the large amounts of sand can brace just about any kind of nasty fall. Sailors, wind surfers and kite surfers also appreciate the lower waves and the strong northeast winds that average around 5 to 12 mph . The majority of these water sport enthusiasts come out when the tide is high and wind swells arrive from the northwest. Air temperatures are generally around 50 – 60 F all year round, while the water reaches a high of 62 F from July to October. It is usually not a bad idea to wear a wetsuit all year round.

Facilities

Santa Barbara is a thriving city that plays to the surf and college scene. Here you can find hotel accommodations, places to eat, and certainly places to party. There is a surf shop and a surfing foundation in the area as well. Santa Barbara is also a peak place for shopping and biking. In fact, if you’re staying in the area for a while, biking is a great way to peruse the beaches, as most of them are only accessible by means that is not a car.

Safety

One could consider college students, especially inebriated ones, to be a safety threat.
