Loissin / Mecklenburg-Vorpommern / Germany

Loissin is located on the Baltic coast of northern Germany and is popular with tourists as well as being a great spot for windsurfers and kitesurfers. The area is also widely used for sailing. The season is mainly from April to November although off season is possible with a thick wetsuit, gloves, mask and shoes.

Loissin has a long, although not very wide, sandy beach that is equally loved by kitesurfers and windsurfers. There is a large shallow area in which you can easily stand that is ideal for beginners. It can get quite busy in the summer months with holiday makers but is not normally over crowded, You can get here by following the signs to Loissin/Gahlkow. When you get to Loissin take the road marked “Zum Strand” and then turn right onto “Am Strandweg” and drive right to the end, where you can park.

The winds are mainly westerlies with depressions and are best in fall and spring. They can vary a lot from 0 up to 10 Bft. The summer winds are much lighter although just occasionally you can pick up some nice north east winds. The water is clean with a large shallow area that is great for beginners. The water is flat to choppy with some waves forming in strong winds. The summers are usually quite warm and the water reaches a maximum of around 22 degrees, dropping to about 15 degrees in fall and spring. The air temperature can reach a maximum of 30 degrees in the summer, dropping to about 15 degrees in fall and spring. The winter months are cold and temperatures struggle to get much above 5 degrees both in and out of the water.

There is camping here with toilet and shower facilities and places to buy food. For a greater choice of shops, bars and restaurants you need to head into nearby Greifswald which has has some good nightlife during the summer months.

Watch out for sail boats and crowds in the summer months.
