General Information
Level:6-10 Season:January 1 — December 31 -
This is a fickle break that doesn't go off very often, but believe me when it does it really goes. It should only be attempted by those who have plenty of experience charging a big wave.
-
Beach
-
This place is on the north point of Spooners Cove. Most of the beach is to the south, with just a small sandy area here – it's mostly rock behind this point. Hardly anybody has the experience or confidence to handle this and you will mostly be out on your own. The sea temperature here will reach maybe 16 or 17° C in summer, and drop as low as 14° C in winter.
-
Wind&Waves
-
This place works with the wind from the east or the north-east and the swell coming from the north-west or the west. You also need to catch it on a falling tide, with the water at the low or mid tide position. When it all comes together, it starts working at a magnificent 3 m or so and will easily hold up to over 5 m. It is a reef break, only to the right, and it often breaks right in front of a protruding rock reef so be careful. The waves are powerful and they come in fast, and they are also ledgey. Length is usually quite short at around 50 m, but it can be up to 150 m.
-
Facilities
-
Park on the grass at the top of the cliffs. There is a campsite here if you plan to stay overnight, but you will get anything more advanced than that.
-
Safety
-
As usual for this area, there are some strong currents and frequent shark warnings. The biggest hazard though is the rocks, and if you surf at anything other than low or mid tide the wave will be breaking far too close to them for comfort.
