General Information
Level:0-10 Season:January 1 — December 31 -
This spot is best thought of as a beginners break, but as long as you don’t mind easy waves then it’s really a decent place for anybody.
-
Beach
-
The beach is sandy and clean, and is a decent size. It can still get crowded however, especially on weekends when half of Napier and Gisborne seem to turn up. As far as the sea temperature goes, it is a warm 20C in summer and a cool 14 C in winter, so pack your kit accordingly.
-
Wind&Waves
-
This spot will start working when the wind is coming from the west or southwest and the swell is out of the southeast or northeast. It will start working at less than 1m and hold up to over 4m on the big winter days, though it will be much less than that during summer. It also works on both rising and falling tides, and at all tide positions. It is beach break, only breaking to the left, and the waves are just a bit of fun – although they can get big, they aren’t fast or heavy. Length is pretty consistently between 50 and 150m.
-
Facilities
-
The beach doesn’t have any facilities, and the nearby community is only small so it doesn’t really have anything to offer either. As its midway between Wairoa and Gisborne though, you’ve got a decent choice of places to use as a base.
-
Safety
-
There isn’t really anything to watch out for, although the locals do all know each other so you’re advised not to drop in on anyone. Locals are generally friendly but do want respect.
