General Information
Level:0-10 Season:November 1 — March 31 -
Right out on the eastern end of Varadero, this is in an ideal spot to catch the wind and currents as they come around the point towards the Gulf of Mexico. Conditions are good and the place is suitable for all abilities of kitesurfer and windsurfer, even beginners.
-
Beach
-
The beach is big and sandy, with plenty of room to launch a kite safely even in an onshore wind. It’s a busy resort area but there is plenty of room and it won’t feel crowded. Temperatures are tropical, with the water about 27 – 28C in summer and 23 C in winter.
-
Wind&Waves
-
November to March brings the best conditions, and may still be good a month either side of those. Because of the curve of the peninsula, the wind is decent and useable from the north, northeast, e, west or northwest and will reach over 20 knots on a good day. The water is clear and shallow for about 50m out, and the surface will depend on the wind and where the sandbanks are – it can be flat, choppy, or have small to medium sized waves up to about 2m high. It is also independent of tide.
-
Facilities
-
You might see some lifeguards on the beach, depending on where you are, and parking is close by the resorts. There is plenty of choice when it comes to places to stay, and even if you just want to visit the area there are a few good bars and restaurants to choose from. Nightlife is excellent and the hotels allow non-residents access.
-
Safety
-
There aren’t really any hazards here, just avoid tourists swimming or walking and don’t go out if there is a hurricane warning – the season for these is June to October.
