General Information

Markgrafenheise is situated on the Baltic coast of northern Germany with a gorgeous white sandy beach that is popular with holidaymakers and sailors. The spot is popular with surfers, windsurfers and kitesurfers but is best suited to experienced surfers since there are a lot of wind breaks in the water and also quite a lot of boats sail past. The season is mainly from April to November, although off season is possible with a thick wetsuit, mask, gloves and shoes.

Beach

There is a long beach with glorious white sand that is about 20 meters wide. There is normally plenty of space apart from in the summer months when it gets packed with holidaymakers, so the area is probably best avoided during July and August. There is also a large campsite nearby. You can get here by taking the L22 and driving towards Niederhagen and then taking a left to Markgrafenheide. Once you're there head straight for the beach and park.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

The predominant winds are westerly frontals with depressions which are best from fall to spring. The summer winds are lighter but on a good day you can get some good north east or east winds which work well here. Sideshore winds are needed to get away from the windbreakers and south west and north east are the best directions. The water is clean with choppy water, turning into waves of up to 1 meter in strong winds. There are lots of wave breakers so you need to keep your wits about you. Summers are good here and the water can be a pleasant 22 degrees, dropping to around 15 degrees in fall and spring. The air temperature is up to 30 degrees at the height of summer, dropping to around 15 degrees during fall and spring. The winter months are very cold.

Facilities

There is a campsite nearby with toilet and shower facilities, plus places to buy food. If you want more shops, restaurants or bars then a drive into Markgrafenheide itself. If you want to party the night away, then a drive into Rostock will give you plenty of choices for nightlife.

Be aware of the numerous wave breakers – this spot is only suited to experts.
