Martinhal Beach Resort is located in a wind swept corner of Portugal's Algarve region and is in fact the most south westerly position in Europe. It is popular with surfers of all types who have some experience and is a great spot for windsurfing particularly, although possibly not the best for kiting as it can be very gusty. The season is mainly from March to October although off season is possible here.

Beach

Sand Gradual descent

The beach is sandy and of a medium size although you need to be careful of the rocks that are scattered around. There is plenty of room for everyone and it is always very windy here. You can get here by heading towards Sagres and looking out for the signs to Martinhal Beach.

Wind&Waves

Wave spot Regular wind

The thermal wind dominates from the north and comes offshore which is great for windsurfers but no so good for kiters. It can get very gusty. The best wind directions for kiting as south, south east and east. The water quality is crystal clear and very choppy due to the strong winds. The easterly winds produce some nice waves of around 1-3 meters. The water is very cold here and you will need a wetsuit at all times.

Facilities

Parking

There is not much here apart from parking so make sure you bring some provisions with you. For supplies and accommodation head back into Sagres which has a wide choice of shops, bars and restaurants.

Safety

There are a couple of safety issues here with the rocks scattered around and the gusty winds which can be very dangerous. You would be well advised not to surf on your own at this spot as you could easily get into difficulties.
