General Information

Level:3-10 Season:March 1 — October 31

Most people think of landlocked Austria as being full of mountains, but don’t realise that between them are a few good sized lakes suitable for windsurfing and kitesurfing.  This spot requires a rating of intermediate or expert, but it is in a great location and if you want somewhere that feels a bit more remote and away from the sea, check it out.

Beach

The beach is only small, made of a mixture of sand and grass, but it is reserved for kiting and you won’t find anyone else out here – crowds are out of the question.  As it is high in the mountains it is cold and you’ll need a thick wetsuit or a drysuit for almost all the year, with the exception being July and August when you can manage with an ordinary wetsuit.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

March to May or September to October are the best times to come up here, when the wind is most reliable, but you will find a few decent days in summer too.  It’s a thermal and the spot only works when coming from the north, and you’ll get speeds of 15 – 20 knots.  The water can be either flat or choppy, depending on wind strength, and it is very clean and clear as you’d expect from a mountain lake.  Obviously, there are no tides to affect it either, so just roll up when you feel like it.

Facilities

Your only way up here is to drive, but you can park right next to the beach.  You do get showers and toilets here, buts that all for facilities so bring what you need with you.

Safety

Kiting isn’t allowed during summer, and you need a licence or membership of the local club to be allowed out.  There are no real hazards here though.
