General Information

Level:3-10 Season:August 1 — April 30

This is just a few minutes south of Surfers Paradise, and shares the same excellent stretch of coastline.  Surfers, windsurfers and kitesurfers all inhabit this area, but it isn’t really for beginners – more than a basic understanding is required to get the most out of this spot.

Beach

The beach is clean and sandy, and not a bad size.  There is plenty of room for launching and landing, and even though it is a busy place it never really seems to get crowded.  The water temperature is about 25C in summer, and 18 – 20 C in winter, with the air a few degrees warmer.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

August to April is the season here, when you can expect 5-6 days of wind per week – outside these months you might get 2 or 3 days.  The average wind strength is between 15 and 25 knots, and can be much more during the cyclone season in late March and April.  The water surface always has decent swells, with the biggest reaching over 3m during the cyclone season and really appealing to surfers at that time.

Facilities

Facilities here are very good and obviously the area wants to take care of its watersport visitors.  Rescue facilities are present in case of difficulty, and there is a shop where you can buy or hire any gear you need.  Showers and public toilets are available on the beach, and there are outlets offering food and drink too.  Head into town for accommodation if you intend to stay, and Surfers Paradise for nightlife.  Getting here is easy from anywhere – fly in to the airport, then drive, or catch a train from Brisbane, or use the local bus service.

Safety

Stay at least 100m away from the flagged swimming areas.  Otherwise, enjoy it.
