If you were to travel a mere 20 miles south from San Francisco, you would come across Montara Beach. Water sports are enjoyed here all year-round.

Beach

The great thing about Montara is that it lacks a reputation for water sports. Yes, this can be a good thing – since the more popular beaches of the San Mateo County can get ridiculously crowded all year round. But, water sports enthusiasts – like surfers, wind surfers and kite surfers alike are learning that this 1-mile long beach has much to offer.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

This sandy beach faces in the direction of the Alaskan Gulf and for this reason alone receives the brunt force of the Pacific Ocean. Wind and kite surfing fare best during the summer season, when south winds blow offshore. This gives Montara an added benefit, because when the San Francisco forecast is stormy and gusty, this south wind pushes that nasty weather away from the beach, giving calmer conditions. It is in the winter months, where the swells and tides intensify, causing the ocean floor to constantly change. If you’re an advanced surfer wanting to catch an epic ride, this is the time to visit Montara. Air temperatures are hot in the summer, averaging around 80 F . Despite this, strong north and northwest winds cool the water all year round, so it’s best to wear a wetsuit.

Facilities

Montara’s State Park can be accessed off of highway 1, and is a short drive from San Francisco, where you can find plenty of hotel accommodations. There is a restaurant right by the beach. Montara is a well-known area to cater to other types of outdoor enthusiasts, like beach walkers and surf fishing.

Safety

Sharks are in the area, but there have been no reports of injury. During the winter months, the water here can be very brutal.
