Montgat is located some 10 kms north of Barcelona on the north east coast of Spain, looking out on to the Mediterranean Sea. It is a popular tourist town and also a great place for all types of surfing at all levels. There is no real season here with winter surfing being possible if you are wearing a thick wetsuit.

The beach is long and sandy with plenty of room for everyone apart from the summer months of June, July and August when it is jam packed with holiday makers. Kitesurfing, is in fact, disallowed from June to the end of September. To get here is easy, just a 10 km drive north of Barcelona, following the coast road.

Montgat is an exposed beach break with winter being the best time for surfing here. There are both frontal and thermal winds at this spot with wind speeds averaging around 5 knots. The best wind direction is from the north west. Short period wind swells are the norm and the ideal wave direction is from the east. The beach breaks offer lefts and rights. There is good surfing at all stages of the tide. Just be careful here for dangerous rips. Summers are hot here and the water is a pleasant 24 degrees with an air temperature of around 30-35 degrees in the summer.

There is nearby parking, shower facilities and places to buy food. If you want a bigger selection of shops, bars and restaurants then head into Barcelona. You will also enjoy some fantastic night life in Barcelona.

Safety

Rips/undertows Localism

Watch out for dangerous rips. Kitesurfing is not allowed from June to September. Also beware of wind breaks in the water and jet skis, which are quite common.
