General Information
Level:7-10 Season:January 1 — December 31 -
This can be a fickle spot and conditions have to be absolutely right for it to break, but when it does it is an epic spot that pro’s will find to be a good challenge.
-
Beach
-
Cayucos State Beach is sandy and quite long, but you won't have much cause to use it with this spot – you need to paddle out quite a way to get to the break. Surfing here is usually a solitary experience, as even when it goes off there are usually other, more popular places firing at the same time. Water temperatures are average for the area, with the summer reaching a maximum of about 17° C and winter dropping to around 12° C.
-
Wind&Waves
-
This spot works best when the wind is coming from the south-east, east or north-east and the swell is coming from the north-west or west. It works only at mid tide and on a falling tide, and the swell will start at 1.5 to 2 m and eventually reach a maximum that can be in excess of 5 m. It is a reef break, both right and left, and the waves are hollow, powerful and fast. Length is short at around 50 m, and you'll never see any more than that.
-
Facilities
-
Lifeguards are only on duty here during the summer. Parking is available behind the beach, but if you are in Cayucos anyway then you might as well just walk to the shore from where you are staying.
-
Safety
-
As always in this area, take note of any shark warnings. Your biggest hazards though are the rocks, and the urchins that are all over the place. Some of the locals can also be pushy, but only if it looks like you aren't capable of surfing this break.
