General Information

Level:0-10 Season:October 1 — April 30

This is a very good spot for learner kitesurfers, but you’ll also get those with more experience out practicing the basics.  It is right on the edge of the town of Hervey Bay, looking out towards Round Island, and has a decent laid back atmosphere.

Beach

The beach is sandy and only small, and is often used as an overspill from the nearby Urangan Pier.  There is a decent rigging area which has plenty of room setting up gear, and there are some stormwater drainage pipes just south of the launching area.  Temperatures are cooler here at the start and end of the season than the rest of the coast, with the air in the low 20’s in winter and mid 30’s in summer, with the water a few degrees less.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

You get a good long season here, with decent wind found between October and April.  It is best when coming from the east or southeast, and you can usually rely on it being between 10 and 20 knots.  After April, the winds swing to come from the west and become gustier, though the odd day will still be good.  The water is shallow and clear, and the surface can be flat, choppy or with small waves depending on the tide – flat at low tide, with the swell building as the tide rises.

Facilities

You can park easily enough on the nearby streets or in the lot by the marina.  Toilets are present on the site, and for anything else just head back into the town itself.

Safety

There is a marina to the south of the area which has a concrete boundary, so avoid running into it.
