General Information

Level:3-10 Season:October 1 — March 31

If you like waves, then this is for you. Good-sized swells attract windsurfers, kitesurfers and surfers who are intermediate level and better.

Beach

The beach is long and sandy, packed fairly hard and clean too. It is a good size but it is a popular place to visit and can get crowded in summer, especially in December and January.  Winter is very cold and a thick wetsuit or dry suit is needed, while our wetsuit is sufficient in spring and fall and a shorty is all you need in summer.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

You get good winds for about half the year here, starting in October and going through to the end of March. The best directions are from the north or the north-east, and will usually blowing at 15 to 20 knots but can be stronger. Winter winds aren't usually very good, but you might get the odd decent day. You will almost always find some sort of wave here, they will start working at less than 1 m and hold up to over 3 m on a good day. If waves aren't your thing, then there are usually flat areas coast to the shore.

Facilities

There are restrooms close by the beach, and parking is easy – it is right next to the pier itself.  Lifesavers patrol the beach, and in the town you will find a few places to stay and some decent restaurants. If that isn't enough for you then the centre of Christchurch is only a few kilometres drive from here and offers a bit more nightlife and entertainment.

Safety

Be careful of swimmers in the water, and don't get too close to the pier itself. Know where the restricted areas are and steer clear.
