General Information

Level:7-10 Season:April 1 — September 30

This is the nearest Long Island gets to being like Hawaii, and its big hollow waves attract experienced surfers from all over.  When everything else is closed out this still fires, but make sure you are used to paddling.

Beach

The beach is big, sandy and clean but it’s largely irrelevant here as the break is so far away.  Park on the lot and move to the left of the building, so that you are facing the ocean.  The break is about 3/4 of a mile out, and if you aren’t sure you can also see it from Ponquogue Bridge.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

Wind directions are considered good if they come from the north, northwest or northeast, and the swell works from the southwest, south, or southeast.  It’s a big spot, the waves only start working at a good 2m – 2.5m, and it’s up all the way from there as they will eventually reach a huge 5m or more.  It works on all tide positions, but the biggest waves will come with a rising tide.  It breaks both right and left, on a sandbar, and the waves are hollow, fast and powerful.  A normal day will have a length around 150m, while a good day can easily see this increase to over 400m and maybe even up to 500m.

Facilities

The public lot at the end of the bridge is pretty big and you shouldn’t have any bother finding a space, even on busy days.

Safety

It’s a long paddle out to the break and you’ll need to be ready for that, but there aren’t really any hazards as long as you can handle a wave of this size and power.
