Pals / Girona / Spain

Situated on Spain's north eastern coast in the region of Girona, not too far from the French border at Perpignan, lies the beach at Pals. It is a great spot for wind surfers and kite surfers of all levels and abilities. This beach gets pretty crowded with tourists during the busy summer months of June, July and August. Because of this, there might well be surfing restrictions in place. It will pay you to check it out before you set off. The best months for surfing are April through to September when the thermal winds blow.

Pals has a lovely big white sandy beach that contains no hazards. To get here you need to drive northbound out of Barcelona to Palafrugal on the N31 following the signs. When you get to Palafrugal you will then pick up the signs for Pals. Head in an easterly direction towards the sea and park right next to the beach.

The main wind directions are easterly and variations thereof, but during the summer the wind becomes more southerly bringing with it some excellent thermal currents. During the winter the wind is more onshore and gusty. The water quality is crystal clear, and conditions are choppy with small waves pretty much all of the time. The water temperature remains somewhere between 12-22 degrees depending upon the time of year, so you will need to suit up and suit down accordingly.

There is ample parking right at the beach and there is also a campsite close by offering accommodation and food. Pals town has a selection of bars and restaurants. If you really want to let your hair down and party the night away, then Barcelona is less than an hour away.

This spot has no real safety concerns. Just be mindful of swimmers and bathers in and around the water during the busy summer season.
