Philorth is a village situated close to Fraserburgh and is used by all types of water sports enthusiasts, particularly, surfers, windsurfers and kite surfers. Like most places in the north east the prime season runs from October to April. Because of its fairly gentle conditions it can be used by beginners and experienced alike.

Beach

Long stretches of sandy dune means that there is plenty of space to pick your spot. If you are coming into Fraserburgh from a southerly direction, turn right at the roundabout, then take the first right again, signposted Cairnbulg. Go past the golf course where you will see the signpost for Philorth. Turn in to Philorth and you will see a car park at the end of the road. Follow the boardwalk to the dunes and you have arrived.

Wind&Waves

The wind here is pretty constant which means you rarely get a bad day for windsurfing and kite surfing. It tends to blow from a south, south easterly direction. This means that this is also promotes a good swell which starts working at around 1 meter and is great for up to 2.5 meters. The waves are beach breakers that break from the right and the left and it is normal to get up to 150 meters, which has to be good news for board surfers.

Philorth itself has close proximity to Fraserburgh where you can get all your supplies etc for your water sport needs. It boasts a nature reserve and a golf links so in the summer there are plenty of birdwatchers and golfers alike.

Although the spot is naturally sandy, you might need to watch out for a fairly strong undercurrent.
