General Information

Level:0-10 Season:January 1 — December 31

This is a pretty good place, with a good regular break and decent waves. It's suitable for all levels of experience, with summer best for beginners and winter best for those who have done a bit more.

Beach

The beach consists of clean white sand and is quite long – you are looking for the area just north of where the Te Rimu Stream splits the beach.  If it gets crowded here during the weekends, but if you like a quieter experience then coming here on a weekday will guarantee you have plenty of room. Water temperatures range from highs of about 22° C in summer to lows of around 14° C in winter.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

This spot works best with the wind coming from the north-west or the west, and the swell coming from the south, south-east, east or north-east. It works at all tide positions, and will start working at less than 1 m and hold up to just over 2 m. It is a beach break, both right and left, and in winter the waves are fast and hollow while in summer they are slower and sloppier.

Facilities

Lifeguards monitor the beach during the summer months.  Parking is just behind the beach, among a little stand of pine trees, and you'll have to bring anything you need with you as there are no facilities on the beach. You are only a short drive out of Gisborne anyway, which is probably the best place to use as a base for exploring this coast.

Safety

There isn't really anything here that you could call a hazard, just don't get in the way of the locals when this spot is at its best.
