General Information
Level:0-10 Season:October 1 — March 31 -
Don’t let the name deter you, there is very little that is dangerous about this spot and it can be used by kitesurfers, windsurfers and surfers of all abilities, from beginners to experienced. It is in the seaside town of Torquay, an hour or so south of Melbourne.
-
Beach
-
This small sandy beach has good access to the water and doesn’t suffer from crowding. The water is cold here, at least in comparison to some of the other parts of Australia, and a wetsuit is definitely needed all year round, even the summer months.
-
Wind&Waves
-
October to March provides the best conditions, with thermal winds coming from the southeast at a speed between 15 and 20 knots. There isn’t much gusting and the wind blows consistently throughout the summer months. The water is clean and shallow, and generally flat unless the wind is stronger than average, in which case you can expect chop or even small waves up to 1 or 2m high.

Facilities
-
There are some decent facilities, as befits a spot of this quality. Shops sell and hire out gear, and there are plenty of places to get food and drink. The beach has showers and toilets, and there is a parking lot by the promenade which means you only have a short walk to the beach. If you head into the town itself you’ll find restaurants, bars and accommodation, though if you want nightlife or somewhere to base yourself in order to visit other spots then Melbourne might be more convenient overall.
-
Safety
-
There are some rocks on the beach, but they shouldn’t cause any problems as they’re easily avoided.
