General Information
Level:5-10 Season:May 1 — March 1 -
Like its sister spot on the other side of the point, this is a good spot for experienced surfers to catch some of the bigger waves.
-
Beach
-
The beach here is sandy but not especially big, with large boulders forming each end. . Getting here is easy, all you need to do is follow Point Judith Road south as far as you can, then follow the signs to the lighthouse. It is public access, and there is a parking lot right by the beach entrance.
-
Wind&Waves
-
For this spot to really work well the wind needs to be out of the northwest, west or southwest and the swell coming up from the south, east or somewhere in between. It starts working at just about 1m or so, but will hold up to 5m and more, giving possibly the biggest waves on the East Coast. It is a point break, exclusively to the right, and is fast and powerful, getting very heavy in winter months. Length is usually about average, somewhere around 100m – 150m, but on a big day it can be very long and reach out towards 500m. It can be crowded even in the week, and weekends are worse.
-
Facilities
-
There are basic facilities in the area, but as the neighboring villages are small and mainly consist of sea workers, there isn’t much in the way of accommodation or other attractions.
-
Safety
-
Watch out for the rocks and the undertows here. Try not to upset the locals who can be possessive of the spot, and avoid the south side of the spot unless the surf is really big (over 5m).
