General Information
Level:0-10 Season:May 1 — September 30 -
A bit of a fickle spot, this can be a fun place when it goes off and it can bring in some big waves that will interest experienced surfers, although on quieter days it’s suitable for beginners too.
-
Beach
-
The beach is private but its sandy and easy to access. You’ll need to get the ferry over here from Long Island, then get yourself across to Center Street. Wear a thin wetsuit even in summer, it doesn’t seem to get too warm here at any time.
-
Wind&Waves
-
The swell only works from the north here, and it will start working at about 1m – 1.5m before building up to an impressive 4m or more. Even better, it does it at all tide positions so it you don’t have to work too hard to plan your arrival time with the ferry over. The waves break both left and right on a sandbar, and they are fast, powerful and a good set to be on. An average day will give a decent length, often up to 150m, and a good day can see double that if the swell is big enough to start with. As it’s a private beach and not too easy to get to, you won’t find more than a couple of other surfers out here at any time, and they’ll probably be local residents.

Facilities
-
There isn’t anything on the beach but next door Ocean Bay Park has a good hotel if you want to do what many visitors do and stay for the weekend.
-
Safety
-
It’s a safe spot apart from the possessive locals, though they’ll probably be ok if you don’t come in a big group or with an attitude, and you don’t want to go traipsing all over the dunes either. They really don’t like that.
