General Information
Level:4-8 Season:June 1 — October 31 -
It is generally thought that Ponto is a misspelling of the Mexican word, punto, meaning ‘point.’ And, believe it or not, it was man’s ingenuity that turned this beach from a lifeless strip of waves into a paradise of tubes – thus recently transforming Ponto into a popular spot for surfers in the San Diego County.

Beach
-
The Army Corp of Engineers, who in the past had made ecological changes to ocean landscapes that subsequently ruined many surfing hot spots, felt it best to open up the Batiquitos Lagoon. By constructing two large jetties, the lagoon pours out in to the Ponto area, thus creating shifting sandbars that compose year round waves.
-
Wind&Waves
-
The south jetty creates tubes off a right in the winter, while the north creates a powerful left in the summer months; forming waves ranging from 2 to 8 ft . Sea temperatures are a warm 70 F from June to October, but stay around 60 F for the remainder of the year.
-
Facilities
-
Ponto is located in the town of Carlsbad, a beach town full of amusements for the entire family. Though packed in the summer, there are plenty of cheap to high end places to eat and stay right within the town. Need some entertainment? You’ve come to the right place. Carlsbad offers everything from golfing, spas, kayaking, skateboarding, drag racing, and even is home to theme parks like Legoland.
-
Safety
-
As the lagoon is continuously pouring out into the beach, it creates a rip that is strong enough to pull unsuspecting surfers out to sea.
