Punta Candor / Cadiz / Spain

Punta Candor sits on Spain's North Atlantic coastline and is fast becoming a popular tourist destination with those wishing for a quieter alternative to the Costa Del Sol. Cadiz as an area is very popular with surfers and sailors alike because of the good climate and the fact that the area commands a lot of wind. Punta Candor is suitable for surfers of all abilities. There is no real season here as all year round surfing is possible with a thick wetsuit.

The beach has glorious golden sand and there is plenty of room for everyone apart from the summer when it gets jam packed with tourists. Kiting is actually forbidden at this beach from June 15^th to September 15^th. You can get here by travelling east from Jerez to Rota. From here go north onto Avenida Punta Candor and you can park near to the beach.

This spot is nearly always windy, although there are several different directions that the wind blows in according to the time of year. March through to the end of September tends to receive westerly winds and then from October to February there is a mixture of north east and south west winds. The winds average around 10 knots throughout the year. The water is lovely and clear although it is quite shallow over the reef, which you need to be aware of. There are also small waves of under 1 meter that break on the reef. The summers are warm here and the water can be a pleasant 23 degrees with an air temperature of around 30 degrees in the summer. In winter the temperatures drop to around 10 degrees in the water with an air temperature of around 18 degrees.

There is parking here and a few local beach bars where you can pick up some tapas but little else. For shops, bars and restaurants you would be best advised to travel in nearby Rota.

Be aware of the reef and watch out for crowds in the summer. Kite surfing is not allow from June 15^th to September 15^th.
