General Information

Level:3-10 Season:January 1 — December 31

This is a good place for surfers, windsurfers and kiters who are rated intermediate or better. Looking out onto the Bass Strait, it catches the winds quite well and has a friendly, laid back atmosphere.

Beach

The beach consists of soft sand, and its size depends on the tide – there is virtually no beach at high tide, and those who aren't confident about launching alone tend to move to the rivermouth area and launch from there.  The water temperature is cool in winter, averaging 12 or 13° C, and in the high teens in summer.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

The wind here usually comes from the south, which is also the most common direction. A south-westerly is possible, but can be gusty because of the headland, and it also occasionally comes from the north in which case the river can be sailed instead of the ocean. Speeds will vary between about 10 and 20 knots, depending on the time of year. The water is shallow and the best time to be here is at low tide, as this gives a bigger beach with more room to launch and land. The surface is choppy over most of the area, with some small waves up to about 1 m high appearing as you get closer to the rivermouth.

Facilities

There is a shop here, public toilets, and food outlets. If you want to drive here, it's about 90 minutes from Melbourne, or alternatively there is a bus service which connects in Geelong and drops you off in Ocean Grove.

Safety

There aren't really any hazards here, but the beach is just difficult to self-launch from at high tide.
