General Information

Level:0-10 Season:September 1 — April 30

Not far north of Brisbane is this spit of an island.  It is ideally placed to catch the currents and winds from the ocean, and can be used by kitesurfers and windsurfers of all abilities.

Beach

The beach is big and sandy, and even better it never sees any crowds so you’ll have as much space as you like to set up and launch or land a kite.  The location means it is a bit cooler than a lot of Queensland spots, so a shorty is recommended for spring, summer and autumn and a normal wetsuit for some colder winter days.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

The wind is good here for a lot of the year, with the only really poor time being from May to August.  It is a thermal wind and blows best from the southeast or south, though you can also get some decent north or northeast winds too.  In any case, it will vary between about 10 knots and 20 knots depending on the season.  The water is often flat, but can have some small waves if the wind is strong enough and from the right direction.  It’s clear water, and the tide doesn’t make any difference to conditions.

Facilities

If you have a 4x4 you can park on the beach, otherwise it is a bit of walk from the southernmost road in Bungaree.  Its an undeveloped area, a conservation park actually, and so there are no facilities here.

Safety

There is nothing here at all that is likely to be thought of as a hazard and you’ll have fun here, unless you have some sort of phobia about beautiful, wide open spaces.
