General Information

Level:0-10 Season:December 1 — March 31

This former fishing colony on the Mornington Peninsula has long since developed into a very popular tourist resort. About 75 km south-east of Melbourne, it is popular with kite surfers and windsurfers of all ability levels.

Beach

The beach is sandy and only small, but there is a large grassy meadow behind it which provides plenty of space for setting up rigging.  You might get a few locals out walking on the beach, but it doesn't exactly get crowded. Temperature wise, it gets hot in summer with the air frequently exceeding 30° C and the water not far behind, while the rest of the year the water is pretty cool and will require a wetsuit.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

The wind here is at the thermal variety, and blow steadily and regularly in the afternoons from December until March. The wind is best when coming from the south-west, though it can also come from the north which is still usable but gusty. In terms of wind strength, you can expect it to be between 15 and 20 knots on average. The water is shallow, there is no tide here to affect conditions, and it's very clean. The surface is mostly flat but can get choppy if the wind is getting strong.

Facilities

You will probably need to drive to this location, as there are no public transport stops nearby. Parking is possible on any of the nearby streets, and is just a couple of minutes walk to the beach from. There are no home comforts on the beach, but the main part of Rosebud town is just on the other side of the road and has all the usual facilities.

Safety

There is a pier to the east of the beach, and you are also likely to see plenty of boat traffic moving around.
