General Information

Level:0-10 Season:May 1 — September 30

This surfing spot is a pretty easy wave, and can be used by beginners just setting out or more experienced surfers who want to practice on easy, consistent wave.

Beach

The beach is actually a thin strip of sand separating Sagaponack Pond from the ocean.  It’s a quiet place and few other surfers go out here, for some reason preferring to travel to some of the busier spots in New York. If you are here in the summer, you’ll only need a shorty wetsuit or just shorts as the temperatures will be heading towards 30c.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

The wind and the swell both work in the same direction here, and are best when they both come from the northwest.  The best tide positions are mid and high tide, and a rising tide is the best movement.  You’ll see that the waves start working at about 1m or so, and will hold up to over 3m on most days.  The wave breaks both right and left on a sandbar, and compared to the surrounding areas they are fast and fairly powerful, with the added bonus that they can often be hollow too.

Facilities

There are no facilities on the beach here, although there is a beach patrol, and Sagaponack itself is only a small place with just the one store.  Parking is limited too, so to make sure of a spot close by you’ll need to be here early in the mornings.

Safety

There some moderate strength currents here, but nothing that should really trouble anyone.  Sharks are also sighted in the area fairly frequently, especially when the cut to the lake is open and the fish run.
