General Information
Level:4-10 Season:January 1 — December 31 -
This spot is one of the best in the South Carolina area. It needs you to take a day trip to get the most from it really, but it is well worth it if you are experienced enough to handle the surf here. It’s pretty consistent, with about 150 days surfing days each year, and it is never crowded, even at weekends.
-
Beach
-
It’s sandy but small, and it’s about a 20 minute walk from parking to the beach, but it’s worth making the effort. The spot is actually in Calabash, just on the south side of the border between North and South Carolina. Off Highway 17, onto Beach Drive, then follow the second dirt track down as far as you can.
-
Wind&Waves
-
The wind here is usually from the north or northwest, and the swell is usually from the south or northeast. The swell starts working at 1.5m or 2m, and holds up to 2.5m or 3m. While it isn’t particularly big, the waves here are fast and relatively powerful, certainly a lot of fun on the right day. It is a beach break, both left and right, and is best on a rising tide although it doesn’t matter if it starts at low or mid tide. Length is anything up to 150m on a normal day, and up to 300m on a good day.

Facilities
-
Calabash is right off highway 17, and has a couple of surf shops and some seafood restaurants that serve the food in their own unique style. Myrtle Beach isn’t far away if you want accommodation and nightlife in a surf community.
-
Safety
-
There are some nasty rocks you need to watch out for here, and the locals are rightly very protective of the spot so don’t show up with an attitude problem.
