General Information
Level:0-10 Season:January 1 — December 31 -
Son Bou sits on a glorious stretch out coastline on the southern end of the island of Menorca. It is a great spot for kite surfers and wind surfers of all levels and abilities. The summer season (June, July and August) does get pretty busy with tourists and beach goers and restrictions may well be in place, therefore it may well be prudent to check before you set off The best months of the year to surf here are January to April, when the winds are from a westerly direction.
-
Beach
-
Son Bou boasts one of the best beaches on the island. It is long and large with soft white sand. There are however a few rocks located at the far end of the beach that you will need to stay away from. To get here you drive westwards on the A721 from Mahon towards Son Bou. When you get here you will find large car parks very close to the beach.
-
Wind&Waves
-
The winds here are frontal and there are also trade winds. The predominant wind direction is north northeasterly, but during the months of January through to April, the wind changes tac to a westerly direction. It is this direction that is the best for surfing in these parts. The wind speed remains a breezy 9-10 knots and is pretty consistent, however the winter months do become gustier. The water quality is crystal clear and is flat to choppy. However, small waves can appear of up to 1 meter in height when the wind is in the right direction.
-
Facilities
-
Son Bou has most things that you need, and all within walking distance. There is ample parking, accommodation, shops, eating places, and a couple of nightclubs if you want to let your hair down.
-
Safety
-
Watch out for the rocks at the far side of the beach. Also keep an eye out for passing ships/boats and swimmers and bathers during the height of the summer.
