General Information
Level:0-10 Season:January 1 — December 31 -
Son Maties is situated on the far west side of the Island of Mallorca and is one of the three beaches that make up Palma Nova. Of the three, Son Maties is the most water sports orientated and is a popular spot for wind and kite surfers due to its large expanse of calm water. There is no real season here, although surfing is not allowed when the beach is crowded and there are lots of swimmers in the water, and so the best time to surf is between October and May.

Beach
-
The beach is long and sandy with plenty of space during the winter to launch and land your kite. The beach is supervised during the summer months and there are also handicapped facilities. The beach is jam packed with tourists during the months of June, July and August and time restrictions may well apply for surfing. The beach is west of Palma and just north of Magaluf and easily reached by bus or car
-
Wind&Waves
-
The winds are frontal and come at you mainly from the east. The winds are at their strongest durng the winter months and the best directions for the spot are north east, east northeast and east. The summer winds are much lighter and the spot is also very crowded. The water quality is crystal clear and the water tends to be choppy with some small waves. Bystanders can make surfing quite difficult at this spot. The air and water temperatures are pleasant and a pair of shorts should suffice in the summer months although you will need a wetsuit during the winter.
-
Facilities
-
There is plenty here with accommodation plus a surfing school and rental shop. There are also shower and toilet facilities and plenty of places to grab a bite to eat and a drink. Parking is close by as well. If you want supplies or are looking for nightlife then Palma de Mallorca has it all and is right on the doorstep.
-
Safety
-
Watch out for ships and buoys in the water. Also during the summer, look out for swimmers and other surfers.
