General Information

Level:8-10 Season:January 1 — December 31

Alright, so the name isn’t the most appetizing word you’ve ever heard. But, despite what you’re thinking, spermaceti actually refers to the waxy substance that is found in whale blubber and inside a sperm whale’s head. The Cove is actually named after a whale that washed ashore in 1668. Anyway, these days, windsurfers enjoy Spermaceti Cove, which is part of Sandy Hook in Northern Jersey. You will also be able to see catamarans sailing not too far from this area.

Beach

The Cove is on the inside of the New Jersey north peninsula; it’s shielded from the intense wave conditions of the outer Atlantic Ocean.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

Water here is flat, choppy, and shallow. Ideal wind directions are from the north, but avoid west winds as they are infused with the turbulence from a nearby west cliff. Windsurfers, kite surfers, and sailors get the best wind from February until April, and then again in October until November. Wind speeds average from 9 to 12 knots. Unfortunately, these are the coldest times of the year, so don’t forget your wetsuit.

Facilities

The only way to access Sandy Hook is by boat. Other than that, stay on the mainland in New Jersey for your eating, sleeping and alternative entertainment needs. Seabright actually has a well established club and bar scene, while Asbury is known for their musical venues. And, if you need some windsurfing or kite surfing equipment, there are shops in the area as well.

Safety

Kite and wind surfers are restricted from the east end of Spermaceti Cove. Watch out for currents and crossing boats.
