General Information
Level:3-10 Season:March 1 — September 30 -
This mountain lake isn’t a bad spot if you happen to be in the area, and provides conditions suitable for intermediate and expert kiters and windsurfers. It’s a really pleasant location, well out of the way of civilisation, and is the only spot in Achensee which allows kitesurfing during summer.
-
Beach
-
There isn’t a beach, and launching a kite is a bit different to the usual – lay out your line on street, swim out to the nearby buoy, and have someone hold your kite up for you. You don’t get any crowds though, and watching a launch is a spectacle in itself. As it is high in the mountains, temperatures are cool all year round – it only gets warm enough for a wetsuit in July and August, and the rest of the year you’ll need a thick wetsuit or a drysuit.
-
Wind&Waves
-
The wind here is of the thermal variety, and is best in spring and autumn although you might get a few decent days in summer. It only works when blowing from the north, and generally gives 15 – 20 knots. The water is flat to choppy, and as it’s a mountain lake you can expect it to be crystal clear with no tide to affect conditions.
-
Facilities
-
There are no facilities here at all. A spot just to the south has showers and toilets, and you can head to a nearby town if you want accommodation. Driving is the only way to get here, but you can park fairly close to the launching point.
-
Safety
-
No hazards here, really. You’ll need a licence or membership of the local club to be allowed to use this spot.
