General Information

Level:0-10 Season:March 1 — May 31

You have a choice here of a sheltered lagoon or ocean facing open water, so there is something here for both kite surfers and windsurfers and for beginners through to experienced users.

Beach

The beach is sandy and fairly big, and forms a barrier between the lagoon and the ocean. It is close during the summer months to protect nesting birds, but as the wind is poor at this time anyway it doesn't make much difference. The bay side has warmer water than the ocean side which will require you to wear a wetsuit at any time except summer.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

The best wind direction here is from the south-west, west, or north-west and you are most likely to find this between March and May or September and November. The wind isn't very consistent generally, mostly relies on a cold front coming through although when it does you can expect speeds of 20 knots or more.  The water is flat on the bay side and is either choppy or has small waves on the ocean side depending on how strong the wind is blowing.

Facilities

There is a public toilet by the beach and there is plenty of parking at the end of the road at the north end of the beach.  There are no town is really close by, so your nearest place for accommodation and food etc is across the water on Chincoteague Island.

Safety

There are no hazards here for anybody.  It's a great place to learn and you can just relax and concentrate on your technique.
