General Information

Level:5-10 Season:January 1 — April 1

Another spot near Montauk Point, this is a bit more fickle than the others but can still be fun when it’s on. It is still only suitable for experienced surfers but is less extreme than the lighthouse area itself.

Beach

The beach is sandy, with a rocky background where it joins the cliff below the lighthouse. Officially, it’s closed to surfing from April to December to allow fishing, but the enforcement of this often isn’t much of a priority. If you come here in winter, you’ll need a thick wetsuit but the conditions are likely to be worth it.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

The best wind here comes from the north, northwest or northeast and the swell works best from the southwest, south or southeast. The waves start working at a decent 1.5 -2m, bigger than neighbouring areas, but don’t get too much bigger as they top out at just over 3m. Apart from the swell direction, tide makes a big difference and you need to be here at mid or high tide, on a rising tide, to get the most out of it. It’s a reef break, only to the right, and the waves comes in fast but have quite a lot of force with them too. Length can be anything up to 150m on a normal day, and on a good day it can be well over 250m. It is probably the most popular spot in the area, meaning it can get crowded at weekends.

Facilities

There’s plenty of room to park by the lighthouse, but don’t come here expecting much more than that. You could get food and drink if the museum is open, but you aren’t going to find a surf shop or rescue facilities here.

Safety

The rips can be strong when the swell is really running, and there are rocks on the bottom to be avoided.
