The beach is very long and sandy and can get extremely crowded during the summer months although the further south you go (south of the harbor) there are fewer people. To get here drive north of Pisa and exit to Viareggio where the beach is clearly signed.

Wind&Waves

Wave spot Regular wind

Viareggio is a fairly exposed beach break which normally has its fair share of waves, although the summer is often flat. The best waves for this spot come from the east northeast. Most of the surf comes in the form of windswells and the best wave direction is from the southwest. The beach breaks are all left. There is good surf at all tidal stages which makes this such a popular location. The water is crystal clear and you can get by with shorts in the summer months and a wetsuit out of season
