Yaquina South Beach / Oregon / United States

General Information

Level:3-10 Season:June 1 — September 30

If you like wide open spaces and plenty of wind, this is the spot for you. It’s probably got the strongest, most consistent winds on the Oregon coast and it is suitable for intermediate level and above kiters.

Beach

You find this on the south side of the Yaquina Bay inlet, right in the South Beach State Park. The beach is sandy, and it really is big. You won’t find yourself rubbing shoulders with other kiters or queuing at the launching spot – there is loads of room for everyone and you can pick your own spot. Summer temperatures never really get over about 16c, and on the other hand the winters are fairly mild as they never fall to less than about 8c.

Wind&Waves

Flat water spot

You get a good thermal wind here. The best and only direction it comes from is the northwest, making it a cross-shore, and it is consistently strong with it so you can pretty much guarantee strength over 25 knots if you come in the afternoons from June to September. Those who like the wave style will get the most out of the place, and you’ll rarely find anyone else out here even on a good summer weekend. The water is clean with good visibility, and the current is fairly slow at no more than 1 knot. There is no tide dependency here.

Facilities

Well, there is a campsite here, and that’s about it for facilities. Newport isn’t far to the north though and there you’ll find the usual array of shops and places to stay if you like home comforts.

Safety

This is the Oregon coast, so it’s going to be cold – kit up accordingly. The currents around here only need care at the north end near the inlet.
