General Information
Level:8-10 Season:April 1 — November 1 -
Zingst sits on a glorious stretch of Baltic coastline to the west close to the Vorpommersee national park. It attracts mainly wind surfers and kite surfers and the odd few surfers. Beginners may find it difficult here because of the wave breakers or Groynes strategically placed along the shoreline. The best times to surf are spring and autumn with the best month for wind direction coming in April. Access to the beach is behind the dunes where there is ample parking.
-
Beach
-
Zingst has a long flowing beach with soft white sand that is also fairly wide so there is plenty of space to pick your spot. However, be aware that it gets pretty crowded during July and August. The beach is backed by grassy dunes that stretch as long as the beach. To find it you need to drive out of Rostock towards Straslund taking the B105. Then take the L21 following the signs for Darss and Zingst. The best access is via the west of the town where there is parking behind the dunes.

Wind&Waves
-
The wind type is frontal and predominantly westerly. These occur mainly from autumn through to early spring. There are some nice north easterly winds that can blow in during the summer, but not too often, as the summer winds are generally lighter. Side shore winds are preferential, in order to steer the surfer away from the breakers. The overall wind speed is around 9-10 knots. The water here is clean and choppy, with stronger offshore breezes producing smaller waves of around 1 meter in height. There is a sandbar approximately 100 meters out and the sea is shallow up to this point. After this it becomes deeper. Water temperature holds at around 20 degrees in the summer, but a thick suit is needed during the colder months.
-
Facilities
-
Located on or near the beach you have, shower and toilet facilities, together with eating places and parking. If you want a little more hustle and bustle, then head into Zingst. For real nightlife, you need to go to Rostock.
-
Safety
-
The dangers here are predominantly the breakers that are spaced out along the shoreline, so be aware at high tide. Also look out for swimmers during the summer months.
